Since the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway opened in April 2026, this has turned into one of the more comfortable outstation drives from Delhi. Pickup from most parts of the city reaches the expressway entry at Akshardham fairly quickly, and from there the road runs via Baghpat, Shamli and Saharanpur before crossing Rajaji National Park on a 12 km elevated wildlife corridor into Dehradun.

What used to be a long haul through Meerut and Roorkee is now largely a controlled-access drive, though the driver still checks the day's traffic before committing — on a bad traffic day out of east or south Delhi, the older Meerut-Muzaffarnagar-Roorkee highway can sometimes work out better depending on where the pickup is.

Dehradun sits in a valley, so the approach is flat for almost the whole way with only a short climb right at the end near Rajaji National Park.
