Gurgaon to Dehradun by Road

This route now runs mainly on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, fully open since April 2026. From Gurgaon the cab first crosses into Delhi to join the expressway at Akshardham, then covers Baghpat, Shamli and Saharanpur before the road crosses Rajaji National Park on a 12 km elevated wildlife corridor on the final approach into Dehradun. The roughly 213 km Delhi-Dehradun stretch, which used to take about six hours, is now closer to two and a half hours on the expressway.

The driver still decides on the day which route to take — the expressway is the faster default, but the older highway via Meerut, Muzaffarnagar and Roorkee remains an option if traffic getting out of Gurgaon and across Delhi to Akshardham is unusually heavy.

This still suits families and elderly passengers well, since the expressway is flat and controlled-access for almost its entire length, with only a short climb near the end. Parents visiting boarding schools and colleges in Dehradun, and travellers continuing up to Mussoorie, both gain from the shorter overall journey time.

Best season: The valley is pleasant from September to April. Summer is warmer than the hill stations above but still easier than the plains. The monsoon brings heavy rain and is best avoided if you plan to continue uphill.

Road note: Dehradun itself is reached on flat road and stays accessible year round. The hill roads beyond it, towards Mussoorie or Chakrata, can face landslide delays during heavy monsoon rain.
