The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, open since April 2026, has changed this route completely. From Gurgaon the cab first crosses into Delhi to join the expressway near Akshardham, then runs via Baghpat, Shamli and Saharanpur before a six-lane spur branches off towards Haridwar. The corridor itself is about 213 km and cuts what used to be a six-hour drive down to roughly two and a half hours on the expressway, though the Gurgaon-to-Akshardham stretch through Delhi still adds its own time depending on traffic.

Not every trip takes the new road end to end — the driver still judges the day's traffic before choosing between the expressway via Baghpat and Shamli, or the older route through Meerut and Roorkee, especially if getting out of Gurgaon and across Delhi to Akshardham looks slow that morning. Once on the expressway itself, though, the drive is fast and consistent, a real change from the stop-start highway towns on the old route.

For families heading to Har Ki Pauri, the shorter drive makes a same-day evening aarti far more realistic than it used to be, even with a slightly later start from Gurgaon. Groups continuing to Rishikesh on the same trip also benefit, since the spur to Haridwar and the onward road to Rishikesh add comparatively little extra time to what is now a much shorter base journey.

Road note: During the Kanwar Yatra in the month of Shravan, usually July or August, the highways into Haridwar carry heavy pilgrim foot traffic and routes are diverted or closed for days at a time. Travel during this period needs to be planned well in advance, and journey times can double.
